Cutural Analysis of National Poverty Center

The National Poverty Center discusses poverty in the United States. During the discussion it breaks the poverty rates down into ethnicity groups and various income situations (i.e. those families who receive food stamps).

The NPC discusses how the U.S. measures poverty. It measures the poverty rates by the information that is collected by the Census Bureau. It’s also determined by the money it takes to support the different family sizes in the U.S. The family is considered poor if the money they bring in is under the amount the Census determines that they need to support their family size. The NPC also discuss how poverty has changed over time. They start from the 1950’s and tell how it has risen and fell over the year. This is the section that strongly supports my paper. It shows graphs that tells how many people in a breakdown from all people, children under the age of 18, elderly people live in poverty. It’s most recent information is in 2004.

I think that this particular section really helps my paper because you can see how my paper relates to the graphs and it also shows that my research was accurate. This site supports my paper thoroughly. The most people in poverty were the single black mothers.

The NPC site goes further into detail by breaking down poverty into the subgroups and children live in poverty. The site also describes how poverty differs among alternative definitions.

The NPC site is a site that helps build awareness on the issue of poverty in the United States. This site really lets the citizens know that their tax money isn’t helping out the society like it should be. Poverty is something that can’t and won’t be taken lightly by myself and others who are aware of the situation and the damage it’s causing on our communities and our youth of tomorrow.
Like my paper the National Poverty center is educating so that we can finds ways to solve this problem of poverty.

These protesters have managed to disrupt the ceremony to the point that they had to reroute the path of the Olympic torch and they have finally managed a huge goal in Paris, they have extinguished the Olympic torches flame. This web page has in depth information of the situation in Tibet.

Jonnalyn

My name is Jonnalyn Gates I am 19 years old and currently a student at Wayne State University. I am majoring in Nursing with the goal of becoming a psychiatric nurse. This is a very important goal to me as my mother was Bipolar and did not seek the help that she needed. She passed away in 2005 from Alcohol poisoning at just 42 years old. I have a very close bond with my two sisters and even though we all live in different cities we stay connected. Right now I am a freshman at WSU I intend to go to Wayne County Community College in order to get ahead on my classes for the summer. I feel like there is never a time when we stop learning and I love being in school as long as I’m learning something that I feel will be relevant to my career as well as my life. Because of how my mom passed away I feel very strongly about human rights. I know without proper laws and a competent government to protect human right they can be denied as well as neglected. Therefore we result in regions where children are starving and dying from diseases that can be easily prevented and or treated. I think as a society we have simply gotten so involved and overwhelmed with ourselves that we have forgotten how to care about others.
My writing is influenced by the things I experience every day. Life is extremely interesting when you belong to more than one minority group. Being a African American Woman going to college, raised in the suburbs, was academically successful throughout my k-12 school career and being overweight in a society that is obsessed with skinny has led me to experience some interesting situations. Being observant has also led me to write. I am very interested in religion and religious freedom because of my own experiences. As a child I was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness. My grandmother was very proud of her religion and was very strict on her children and grandchildren to follow it. I was 13 years old when I discovered that other religions even existed. It would take me another three years to find enough courage to research these new found religions and only a few months after that to claim atheist. The Buddhist belief has always fascinated me and I took some ideas from this belief and incorporated into my own ideas on life and beliefs. I find myself confused often about where I stand as it related to choosing just one belief. It is because I was denied the freedom as a child to make my own decision based on how I felt about religion that I felt everyone should be entitled to religious freedom. Religion should not be forced upon you ever. The way parents force their ideals and religion on their children is sickening to me and many find their children rebelling against these forced ideas when these children get old enough to base their feeling on their own beliefs. In my writing I try to convey my ideas on religion and religious freedom.
I think sometimes that some may view my writing as an atheist attack on the religious structures. I try to implement my perspective on the subject I’m writing about which may make my work a bit biased. Many issues I write about and am passionate about writing about are controversial and people see the issues as a elephant in the room. You know that it’s there but you try to avoid it none the less. I enjoy writing about subjects that I am passionate about and I think my writing reflects this. I know that as I mature and experience new things my writing can only get better and hopefully more interesting to an audience.
I love the wave of all the new ways people can publicize their opinions and knowledge of subjects. I think blogs are great because they allow you to voice your opinion to an audience and you can do it as openly as you want. You can remain anonymous and therefore not be as victim to others scrutiny as you would be by doing it in person I think blogs have made people feel more comfortable with their own opinion . It’s comfortable knowing that you’re not the only one who feels a certain way or have fallen victim to a certain situation. The new media is allowing more people to communicate. People who never will have the chance to meet don’t have too they can simply chat or email back and forth. Groups can reach more people on the internet than in person. The new media is excellent. With everyone’s opinions it will be much easier to come up with diverse solution to problems that affect us all but no one can seem to pin point the right solution.

Alysia Bonds- Women and Proverty

My name is Alysia Bonds and I am 18 years of age. I have a three year old son whose name is Jacob. Jacob is the highlight of my life; he acts as both my internal and external motivation. I had my son at the age of fifteen, so yes I contributed to the population of un-wed teen mothers. I also contribute to the population of poverty. Although I contributed to that populace I stood out. I went on to complete high school and I finished my high school years with a 3.35 GPA (Grade Point Average). I am currently in college and I attend Wayne State University. I am a freshman, but I am at the end of my freshman year and well on my way to becoming a sophomore. My major is nursing, but who says I am going to stop there. I am pursuing the goal of become a Certified Registered Nurse of Anesthesia (CRNA).
I am a well driven and highly self-motivated person who sets out to accomplish all that I do. I am well known for my drive, hard working ethics and determination.
My writing has improved over the past 6 years that I have been required to do so. With the requirements of both my middle and high school writing was a major role in our curriculum. For our senior requirements we were required to write a 75-100 page autobiography. Which was a bit of a challenge at first but now I see that it has prepared me for the college writing.
While attending the writing course here at WSU, which is English, 1020 I have been pushed to bring out my writing skills that will help further my career. I am now able to look at writing as outlet to my ideas.
When I put the pen on the paper my hands take over before I can realize what it is I’m writing. Which I have recently learned is a good thing. This allows me get all of my ideas out and then come to them later on to elaborate.
The whole purpose of our Human Rights blog is to educate and help others find a voice in our work. Helping them find their voice will also help them utilize their freedom of speech. To my understanding human rights means having the right to express yourself whether it is verbally, physically or emotionally. These rights are protected by the U.S Amendment. So why not take advantage of our rights and let our opinions, thoughts and voices be heard? Well here is your chance. We, the Wayne State University Ladies for Human Rights, are giving you our audience a chance to voice your opinion and be heard by someone other than your family and friends.

About Me-Jessica

My name is Jessica Billick I grew up in the city of Detroit and now I’m a freshman at Wayne State. Writing somehow found me and became my gateway to express my opinion and feelings about many issues that were and still are happening in Detroit. I love to write not only to give my side but to allow for debate and to help others argue and find their own voice. I like what I write to be arguable so that as I refute or agree, I find new ideas reshape my own or find more reasons to keep my central argument. Writing to me is about finding a voice or helping others realize what theirs is by having them either agree or not about your claim. A lot of my writings tend to ask a lot of questions because the answers are very relevant to the person reading and sometimes in order to understand the writing as a whole you must answer these questions. I am a very freestyle kind of writer, I may write down ideas or passages just as they come to me and I rarely brainstorm. I just let my writing flow from my head and put it down on paper then revise. I find that some of my best ideas come this way.

Today’s media seems to me to be centered on all people having whatever opinion they have. They don’t leave much room to argue or try to express both sides, but it does hold a lot of power when it comes to how we feel about certain aspects of society such as politicians or the economy. When we depend on them to just tell us what’s going on and how we should feel about it we sometimes do not question whether what they are saying is all true. We forget that the media is not infallible and how much sway they have on us.

Some of my writings:

Encomium to Helen analysis :

The power of speech and persuasion is a device that is not to be taken lightly. This is what Gorgias wished to convey to his audience in his Encomium to Helen of Troy; Gorgias is faced with the task of defending Helen with the excuse of speech, love, and force. Who is she but a beautiful women caught under the net of persuasion. He believes that Helen is not at fault for what she was made to believe, rather the words of the one whose belief caused her to blunder. She did not but what she was compelled, through these expressions, to do. If these words are so commanding, then can it not be said that rhetoric, which caused poor Helen to leave her husband, can be damaging to truth and belief when faced with the determination of someone very convincing? This is what Gorgias was faced to answer against Socrates. Socrates felt that rhetoric was a tool which worked without the use of knowledge; an ignorant man could sway an audience to believe something that was not of honest purpose. Of what nature was an “art” that needed no comprehension or genuineness, but merely the belief and powerful words of an individual? Gorgias argues that rhetoric could not be blamed for the ill-means of those that used it perversely, but that it had pure purpose, and like any other art, could be corrupted easily. As in the case of Helen, who can be seen as a victim of rhetoric under Socrates definition, with her values stripped away under Paris’s words. I do believe that Gorgias did not do an exceptionally good job of defending rhetoric. His first mistake was showing the power it had to distort Helen’s beliefs, and then by saying to Socrates the power it had to enslave those unfortunate enough to not be able to defend themselves. I agree with him, in that rhetoric has good purpose, but that it is solely up to the individual’s opinion and how they wish to use it.

Religion and Advertising:

Through all of our evolutionary advances and the modifications that they have brought upon many social institutions, one seemed to remain unchanged, religion. It has always seemed to be a preference based upon an individual’s own sacred desires and principles. Now, however, we are starting to see a new trend in advertising, where religious conviction and faith is the selling point. Has corporate America gone as far as to convey our values on a 30 second commercial or a print ad? I would not be so quick to be doubtful, if not even our psyche can be protected, what gives us the right to have reservations that our convictions are any more secure? It appears that we have begun to fall victim to losing not only our mental identity, but out spiritual one as well. My first two ads center on The UCC and their controversial campaign in the present day, the Tahoe “ad” shows how we can sincerely use humor to address a rising issue. The three ads I am evaluating are marketing very diverse “products”, and yet they all give us the feeling that not even religion can be safeguarded against an inevitable synthesis with the supremacy that is capitalism.
"The churches that are going to survive in this era are going to need to be on TV." Does this comment from a UCC spokesperson hold true for all others in her position? Who’s to be blamed for this new development, is it our own sense of indecisiveness that causes us to quickly replace an inadequate element with another, or is it the church, who has found a new path to our devotion, that is to be held accountable? The UCC has become known for its controversial way of using advertisement for member enrollment. In one 30 second commercial titled “The Bouncer”, we see a place of worship with a line of individuals anxiously waiting to enter; two men with the facade of classic bouncers that you would encounter at the entrance of a nightclub seem to be selecting those “worthy” enough to enter the church. While a standard looking white American family is graciously ushered in, several individuals find themselves not permitted access, including a Middle Eastern boy, a homosexual couple, an African American girl, and a handicapped man. Then a message appears on the screen saying “Jesus didn’t turn people away and neither do we”. The point the UCC seemed to be communicating might have been one of welcome, but the underlying message of a brand seems to be ever nearby.

Unrest in Tibet

Unrest in Tibet: Religious Genocide

“But of course, Religion is poison. It has two great defects: it undermines the race and retards the progress of the country. Tibet and Magnolia have been poisoned by it.” Mao Zedong

Tibetan Buddhism is a religion that was forced into exile when Tibet was conquered by the Chinese. The Chinese government has made it very clear how it feels about religion. Past events and its recent crackdown on Tibetan Buddhism ahead of the 2008 Olympics is a portrayal of their attempt to regulate religion in Tibet. Soon after the Chinese government began its annexation of Tibet it began to undermine its religion and social system. In the 1950’s the Chinese authorities realized that religion was the major obstacle to their control of Tibet, soon after this realization a democratic reform was started. The Chinese government maintains control on the religious practices and places people worship in Tibetan areas. Demonstrations began on March 10th, 2008, the 49th anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan uprising against the communist party’s rule that failed. These protests are gaining the Chinese government negative publicity ahead of the 2008 summer Olympics which are going to be held in Beijing. The struggle for Tibet’s freedom has been going on for nearly half a century and the recent protest have gained the oppressed country worldwide attention. The Chinese government’s attempt to gain control of Tibet by completely eliminating Tibetan Religion and culture is religious genocide. Using research focused on Tibet’s history of conflict with China and analysis on the present events that have occurred between the two, Conclusions draw that it is not a political battle the Chinese government is fighting, they are committing acts of genocide in Tibet because this is the only way they feel they can control Tibet , through their religion.

Part A:

Hello and Welcome to the blog of the Human Rights, We Stand Forever! My name is Egypt Johnson; I currently am a freshmen student attending Wayne State University, pursuing and working towards by B.S. in Chemistry at this present moment. I may make a change, but have not made a decision to do so. I am also in the Pre-Medicine program so that I can be qualified to attend medical school and come a few steps closer to becoming an Obstetrician/Gynecologist doctor. It’s quite funny because I only am interested in half of what I mentioned in the previous sentence. I really enjoy working with people who need services, and what other field would compliment than the Medical one. I try to motivate myself as much as possible, however, sometimes I give up, but I also think about what I as a person needs to get done and I make sure I get it done. I enjoy helping out others and receiving help from others. Some of my hobbies include golfing, swimming, volleyball, baseball, basketball, and any other outdoor activities and sports. I was born and raised in Detroit, MI, and it’s a shame to see how dramatically the economy of eat is falling, but that’s another story.
Since the beginning of my second semester, I have been enrolled in English 1020 at Wayne State University. When you think of English, many think of writing; writing to me is a form of expression of ideas, views, and opinions. Writing has so many aspects to it, and can be a way of persuasion, entertainment, or communicating something in regards to other people. I have always been a semi-confident writer because I just wrote about how I felt, never over-thinking or analyzing my writing as a whole. I just wrote based on what I felt should be said. At the beginning of my English 1020 class, I was in a huge awakening because I was totally lost somewhere in nowhere land. I had no idea what was to be done and was doing what I understood should have been done in concern to the writing we were obligated to doing. The tasks that were expected throughout the class, you can say I was doing the total opposite. The reason for my doing that I was misinterpreting what was wanted of my professor. I should have asked more questions of the specifics of each of our assignments because I waited too late to play catch up after I had already made two U-turns and so many wrong turns. I believe my writing has improved and I as a writer have also improved, because throughout this class, I have grasped the rhetoric of analyzing and evaluating other readings and my writing also. I admit I still need more practice and have not totally grasped the concepts of writing but I am more conscious of ways of writing now than I was before.
Today, our society is built and formulated around the media. The media somehow regulates how we as people in society live and think about life. Everything people watch on television, read in newspapers, hears on the radio, determines how people think, feel, and act within the society. Everyone does not mimic what is broadcasted from the media, but majority of today’s society does; ranging from children to adolescents, then to adults. Society revolves around what’s hot and what’s not. Media has its positives and negatives, but it’s up to society to differentiate between the two.

Abortion is a societal issue that involves a woman having an operation that includes a woman terminating an unwanted and unplanned pregnancy. Women for plenty of years have had doubts and conflicts on the subject abortion. Choosing rather or not to have an abortion is a right of choice that women should be privileged to. Some people believe abortion is wrong while others believe it is still a woman’s choice. Morally, taking another human being’s life is wrong and abortion is a theory of that. According to http://www.michigan.gov/, the Michigan’s Department of Community Health’s, Public Act 133 of 1993 created Michigan’s Informed Consent for the Abortion Law. This law specifically gave women information on the abortion process and the things that will happen during the abortion process. Abortion is not for everyone but it becomes a decision for some women and their relationships. Many women turn to abortion because they may not be in the position to conceive a child at a present moment in their life. Continued @ http://jg1020.pbwiki.com/egypt+j

Depression

Depression Awareness Week starts today, and runs until Friday, April 18th. It’s telling that depression has become enough of a problem in our society to merit its own week.

Depression is a physical and mental illness, and emotional condition that results to hopelessness, and sadness. This illness effects adult, children, and elderly people. It causes pain and suffering to brain, body and may destroy family life. A depressive illness can affect your love ones and others around you. You may become angry with someone because of the tone in their voice, or just wanting to take your angry out on someone else to make you feel better. If a depressed person does this, it’s not going to make them feel any better just stupid and more depressed. Don’t take your depression out on other because those are the people who can only help you.

Depression is very common and affects as many as 1 in 8 people in their teen years. Depression affects people of every color, race, economic status, or age; however, it does seem to affect more girls than guys.

What do you feel when you here the word depression?

Down, Press, Depressed all of these word means somethimg bad. when someone tells me there down i think of being sad , unhappy with self. The word press could mean media which could mean something distorbing because most of all the news media is violent.

When talking to someone and there depressed , they may give you the the vibe of lack of who gives a care about anything, they maybe very forgetful . Some just want to give you on eveything because thinngs aren't going as planned. Life is not perfect , and it never going to be.

People have all kinds of depression that can't be solved by medication , because it could make it worst , which could result deeper depression. It could make you thuink at whatever your depresssed about more.

I know someone who believes alcohol makes everything better because it makes you relaxed and you could forget about all the thing that makes you stressed. I believe that it is stupid , Alcohol make a depressed person more loss to speak opinion about about whatever it is they are depressed about. Why? because when you are sober you don't have enought guts to express yourself about the problem.
Truth may hurt but it is reality!!!!!!!

What’s the true definition of Marriage?

Every society has its own standard of what they find acceptable regarding many universal practices. To me nothing shows how these differences take an effect on others than the word taboo. To me taboo means a practice or belief of a society that may not be acceptable or may even be illegal in other societies because it gives off negative stigma. This term, when readily applied to different practices other than your own, can lead to misinterpretations and even prejudices that can prevent common ground on many issues. The institution of marriage is so diverse in every different society that it has taken on both universal and particular taboos.

To understand this we must define marriage by our society. In the United States the institution of marriage is based upon or ideas of romance, love, and free-will. The majority seems to be of the mind that one man and one woman should be in love and take their vows before God for it to be recognized as a “real” marriage. Anything that violates the romantic or religious ideas of marriage can be considered taboo by our society, which can include polygamy, arranged, and same-sex marriages. To me they seem to each hold a unique characteristic that makes them so taboo to our society.

Polygamy is a marriage structure that has one man or women having more than one spouse. The prevalent form involves one man having more than one wife. This can be considered taboo because of the view that many have of polygamy. Some see it as purely sexual gratification on the part of the single gender involved. To many the idea of more than one partner defeats the idea of love and marriage which seems to be the preference in the U.S. Religion can also be attributed to the reluctance or acceptance to practice polygamy. About 5% of Utah has Mormons that practice polygamy, and they hold a big percent of those that do practice this form of marriage even though it is illegal in the U.S. Also polygamy is practiced in other parts of the world for various reasons including the sustaining of bloodline. In many African tribes their Islamic religion permits them to have more than one wife as long as they are able to provide for them economically. For many of these tribes having more than one wife is more for economic reasons than for anything else. Can we say that those who practice polygamy, such as Mormons or those in Togo are doing something wrong just because it violates the majority belief in the U.S. and creates a taboo when compared to our own definition? It may be because of religious beliefs about one man and one women or it may be because of the romantic idea of marriage, either way polygamy seems to still threaten some regarding the sanctity of marriage, but it is not the only form of marriage which threatens our society’s beliefs.

Women and Poverty

What is the definition of poverty? Poverty is undergoing deprivation of those things that determine the quality of life, including food, clothing, shelter and safe drinking water. Also it includes having an equal opportunity to education and employment. In this paper I will touch on the effects of poverty as it pertains to single African American mothers in Michigan.
It has grown over the past decades, years, months, weeks, well you get the point. “We” as a country shouldn’t have let it get to the heights that it is at now. In 1947 the federal government first calculated poverty rates it should have been addressed at that point in time. (Women In Poverty Committee, pg 1) But, was it handled then? No, that’s why I am writing to inform my people of the current issue. I am exposing it to the light, so that we may come together and work this thing out.

...Every year the number of women that experience economic stress increases.(Women In Poverty Committee, pg 1) This results in women becoming the head of the house hold and children that are raised on poverty. As the number of women in poverty grows so does the number of women on state assistance and it doesn’t accomplish much except fail to provide the basic needs for these families. According to the Women in Poverty Committee, the affects that poverty has on women have not changed but the effects on the children living in single parent homes have increased. It has also affected our communities as well.

“The problems Michigan women living in poverty have are not new. However, the degree to which it affects the community and the future if the children living in single-parent households has increased in recent years.” (Women In Poverty Committee, pg.1)
The three major things that play a role in poverty for women are age, gender, minority status and the low rate of child support payments from the fathers. People who have been poor for eight years or more are more likely to be female and a member of a minority. (Women In Poverty Committee, pg. 7)
