Unrest in Tibet

Unrest in Tibet: Religious Genocide

“But of course, Religion is poison. It has two great defects: it undermines the race and retards the progress of the country. Tibet and Magnolia have been poisoned by it.” Mao Zedong

Tibetan Buddhism is a religion that was forced into exile when Tibet was conquered by the Chinese. The Chinese government has made it very clear how it feels about religion. Past events and its recent crackdown on Tibetan Buddhism ahead of the 2008 Olympics is a portrayal of their attempt to regulate religion in Tibet. Soon after the Chinese government began its annexation of Tibet it began to undermine its religion and social system. In the 1950’s the Chinese authorities realized that religion was the major obstacle to their control of Tibet, soon after this realization a democratic reform was started. The Chinese government maintains control on the religious practices and places people worship in Tibetan areas. Demonstrations began on March 10th, 2008, the 49th anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan uprising against the communist party’s rule that failed. These protests are gaining the Chinese government negative publicity ahead of the 2008 summer Olympics which are going to be held in Beijing. The struggle for Tibet’s freedom has been going on for nearly half a century and the recent protest have gained the oppressed country worldwide attention. The Chinese government’s attempt to gain control of Tibet by completely eliminating Tibetan Religion and culture is religious genocide. Using research focused on Tibet’s history of conflict with China and analysis on the present events that have occurred between the two, Conclusions draw that it is not a political battle the Chinese government is fighting, they are committing acts of genocide in Tibet because this is the only way they feel they can control Tibet , through their religion.
